How to read the research

Different questions, different measures.

American Bible Society defines a Bible user as someone who uses the Bible outside a large church service at least three times a year. Its Scripture Engagement measure goes further, combining frequency with questions about the Bible’s influence in a person’s life.

Pew Research Center reports how often adults say they read scripture outside religious services and how often they pray. These studies use different questions and field dates, so their results should be read alongside the definitions provided by each source, not treated as interchangeable.
